The Prince’s Operation Entrepreneur (POE), is a national program for transitioning Canadian Forces members interested in realizing their dreams of entrepreneurship. This uniquely Canadian program offers the men and women who have bravely served our country the education, financing and mentoring needed to start and sustain their own successful businesses.
The Department of National Defence identified the need to help entrepreneurial-minded medically released and soon-to-be-retired Canadian Forces members facing reintegration back into civilian life. They approached Enactus Memorial in 2008 to create such a program and we developed Based in Business. Based in Business is a week-long entrepreneurial boot camp held at Memorial University where deserving Canadian Forces members learn all about opening their own business from professors and industry experts during the day. In the evenings, participants work one-on-one with Enactus volunteers to apply what they learned in the classroom to their business plan. This program is also completely free of charge for the participants.
In 2011, just three short years after we piloted Based in Business, it was recognized by the Prince of Wales as the best entrepreneurial transition program in Canada and last year we officially launched a three year partnership with the Prince’s Charities Canada to create the Prince’s Operation Entrepreneur (POE), a two phase-program.
In phase one, veterans attend the Based in Business boot camp and to ensure their long-term success and in phase two these entrepreneurs are given access to financing and professional mentoring from the Canadian Youth Business Foundation, allowing them to kick-start their new ventures.
This summer our Based in Business boot camp was offered at the University of Regina in Saskatchewan and was also offered in French at Universite Laval in Quebec City. Going forward we have plans to continue the Canadian expansion of the POE program as well as expand into other countries in the commonwealth, helping to make more entrepreneurial dreams a reality.
